The Code Council certification program is the oldest, largest, and most prestigious credentialing program for construction code administration and enforcement professionals in the United States.  Code Council certification examinations are maintained to the highest standards and include continuous review by committees of experienced professionals.

There are currently 13 ICC certified Permit Technicians in Ohio, and 8 of them are members of the Central Ohio Permit Technicians. Becoming an ICC certified Permit Technician is a significant personal and professional accomplishment. This certification is invaluable to you as well as to your department.

The International Code Council (ICC) administers the Permit Technician Certification exam. You can either download this manual from the ICC website or ask that a copy be sent to you.

    • 2006 IBC (Chapters 1,2,3,6,12 & 34)
    • 2006 International Zoning Code
    • 2002 Legal aspects of Code Administration
    • 1999 Basic Code Enforcement-8th printing or later

These reference books can be purchased through ICC at www.iccsafe.org/e  or the WABO bookstore at www.wabo.org/codebooks.  You can purchase “The Permit Technician Study Companion” as an informational study guide.

  • 2 hour limit
  • 60 multiple choice questions
    General Administration 23 questions, 39%

Certification Cost
Current examination cost: computer based exam is $180 or paper pencil exam is $180.  Exam costs are subject to change, check the ICC website Exam Cost for up-to-date information.

Keeping your Certification Current
In order to keep your certification current you will need to renew it every three years.   You must have at least 15 CEU credits (certified education units) every 3 years. Attendance at our quarterly meetings will count as much as 2 CEU credits towards your required certification.
